Underfloor Heating

What is underfloor insulation?

Underfloor insulation adds a layer of insulating material to your ground floor so less heat escapes into the ground or the space below. On suspended timber floors (common in older homes), insulation is fitted between the joists from underneath or by lifting some floorboards.

On solid concrete floors, rigid boards are usually laid over the slab (or added when the floor is replaced). The aim is warmer rooms, fewer draughts and lower heating bills.

You normally only insulate the ground floor. Upper floors don’t usually need it unless they sit over an unheated space like a garage or cellar.

Any air bricks shouldn’t be blocked: these ventilate the underfloor void and help prevent rot.

What to Expect

Your floor type would be identified, and we would check for damp/rot and make sure sub-floor ventilation is adequate before work starts.

Suspended timber floors: insulation (e.g., mineral wool or rigid boards) goes snugly between joists and is held in place; boards may be lifted if there’s no crawl-space access.

Solid floors: a layer of rigid insulation is added over the existing slab (raising floor level slightly) or included when replacing the floor. Doors/skirtings may need adjusting.

Expect some dust/noise and temporary room closure while floor coverings are lifted and refitted. Where floors are insulated from below (cellar/crawl space), disruption is usually lower, with products such as spray insulation.

Air bricks will be maintained to manage moisture so you don’t create condensation or timber decay risks.

Internal works usually don’t need planning permission, but listed buildings need consent.

Ventilation – Because insulation and airtightness will improve, we will assess ventilation in your home so moisture doesn’t build up, which may result in some upgrades being required (e.g. trickle vents in windows, new fans in bathrooms, etc) – these will be explained prior to any works commencing.

Benefits of having underfloor insulation

  • Lower energy usage – insulation helps prevent heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, leading to lower heating and cooling costs.
  • Warmer, more comfortable rooms and cosier floors underfoot.
  • Fewer draughts from gaps between floorboards and skirtings.
  • Helps reduce carbon emissions by using less energy to heat your home.
  • Can be done room-by-room to manage disruption.
  • Keeps the outside of your home unchanged (all work is inside/under the floor).
  • Suitable for floors over unheated spaces (e.g., cellars/garages) to stop cold seeping up.
  • Cuts carbon emissions by reducing the energy needed to heat your home.
